A really interesting comp of Australian indie bands who graced the tiny stage at the old Southern Cross Hotel which was later renamed the Strawberry Hills Hotel (the Sydney suburb where the hotel is still located today). Just up the road was the more infamous Sydney Trade Union Club. The stage looked like it was only being held together by all the old gaffa tape stuck everywhere - a bit like many of the regular patrons. I saw the Gun Club play there in '83 (which is mentioned on the back cover) - they were trying to pay for their fare home after apparently being ripped off by their tour manager or the promoter. A certain member of the audience, who happened to run Green Records at the time, was heckling Jeffery Lee Pierce all night with lines like "bring out the dead, bring on Bryan Gregory", but Jeffery Lee certainly held his own with some excellent counter sledging! Incidentally, Spencer Jones & Billy Pommer from the Johnnys played in the Gun Club for that tour, but that's another story...Back to the LP, its a consistently good compilation and all the songs are exclusive to this release - its quite rare and difficult to find these days, but worth the effort and still affordable unlike some lesser Australian post-punk releases. I was wondering if the LP came with an inner sleeve because the tracks are not listed on the back cover and the bands listed there are not in the correct playing sequence - i'm uncertain because obviously my copy has no inner sleeve.
